Pregnancy on the Isle of Man vs the UK: What's Different

If you have moved to the Isle of Man from the UK, or are comparing maternity entitlements, here are the key differences to know about.

Last updated: 27 February 2026 · By the pregnancy.im team

Key takeaway

The Isle of Man has its own maternity system separate from the UK. Key differences include no Statutory Maternity Pay (replaced by Maternity Allowance from the IoM Government), a different birth registration process at the General Registry in Douglas, and its own National Insurance contribution system.

Maternity pay and allowance

This is the biggest difference. On the Isle of Man, there is no Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP). Employers are not legally required to pay you during maternity leave. Instead, eligible women claim Maternity Allowance directly from the Isle of Man Government.

Isle of Man UK
Statutory Maternity Pay Does not exist. Employers not required to pay 90% of earnings for 6 weeks, then £187.18/week for 33 weeks (2025/26)
Maternity Allowance (employees) 90% of average weekly earnings, up to £250/week for 39 weeks 90% of earnings or £187.18/week (whichever is lower) for 39 weeks
Maternity Allowance (self-employed) £217.70/week (Class 2 NI) or £27.00/week (Small Earnings Exception) Up to £187.18/week for 39 weeks
Who pays? IoM Government (Social Security Division) SMP: employer (reimbursed by HMRC). MA: DWP
When to apply From 26 weeks of pregnancy, at Markwell House, Douglas SMP: via employer. MA: from 26 weeks via Jobcentre Plus

As of February 2026, IoM Maternity Allowance rates increased by 3.5% for 2025/26. Always check gov.im/maternity-allowance for the latest rates. Some IoM employers offer contractual maternity pay on top of the government allowance, so check your employment contract.
